A Steady September

We’re happy to report another month of improvement for DC-area open restaurant sales. Each month since the pandemic first reared up, sales have progressed positively in terms of monthly averages for year-over-year sales. While they aren’t where we want them to be (yet!), the consistent improvement each month is commendable.

Out of our sample, 7.9% DMV restaurants are closed (either temporarily or permanently), ticking up a little from August. However, it is notable that we’re still faring better than the rest of the country in terms of closures.

Another positive note – delivery! Delivery is only making up around 15% of restaurant sales. When we saw delivery hit about 40% of sales earlier in the pandemic, we were concerned about that number returning to pre-pandemic levels. It turns out, people love to dine out, when possible!

About these metrics: The MarginEdge monthly snapshot of DC Metro restaurant sales is based on a sampling of 300+ area restaurants ranging from fast-casual to full-service.
