DMV: Prepping for Reopening

The majority of the month was spent before Phase 1 reopening with only the last weekend as a view into the impact of adding patio dining. But the first weekend in Phase 1 was also the beginning of a tumultuous weekend of protests, making our initial view on the impact of Phase 1 hard to definitively decipher.

What we do know is while the year-over-year numbers are still very low, we are seeing a slow and steady climb upward. We also know that our data in reopened markets has shown promising upticks in sales numbers, in some cases seeing a 30% jump over the first few weeks after restrictions were loosened. We are hopeful that we will see the same impact in June.

In terms of closures, for many restaurants patio dining will likely not be the tipping point between doors closed and doors opened due to the economics of staffing back up for limited seating, but we hope the additional option proves to be valuable to those who have expanded their take-out/delivery to include patio seating adding additional revenue to already opened establishments. We expect to see a drop in closures as the area moves beyond Phase 1.
